In the famous insurance commercials, the poor caveman can never seem to get it quite right.  However, when it comes to eating…the caveman is spot on!

When asked what a proper diet is, the easiest answer I have for someone is to imagine what a caveman ate…and that’s what you should eat.

Imagine what was accessible to a caveman thousands of years ago…lean meats, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds…this is exactly what the majority of our diets should consist of.  Also, eating small portions every 2-3 hours will keep your metabolism steady and not cause sugar spikes, also known as insulin surges.

We can learn a lot from our predecessors especially when it comes to eating.

Maybe a commercial should be made to praise the caveman and his diet.

We’ve all heard the phrase the eyes are the window to the soul.  Well, your skin may the window to your gut health.  When people present to my office with psoriasis, dry skin, eczema, rosacea or other similar skin disorders, I know immediately that their gut is unhealthy.

Your skin is like the lining of your gut turned inside out.  Once we help bring balance back to the gut by eliminating toxins, allergens, and addressing any “leaky gut” issues, the skin clears up nicely.

I’ve had patients who used pharmaceutical creams for years and were unable to clear up their skin problems who were amazed how quickly their skin cleared up simply by getting their gut health to return.

So, if you want healthy glowing skin…starting with cleaning up your gut will be key.

From time to time I talk with patients who have seen holistic doctors for their condition and think that they have already exhausted that route of treatment.  When I ask what tests have been done, they tell me blood, food allergy, saliva testing…some of the similar tools I use, but when I ask them to see their follow up tests, they give me a confused look and tell me that they were not re-tested.  Unfortunately, this is one of the shortcomings of some practitioners….they never re-test.

One set of tests only deliver a baseline.  The key to success to make sure the body has healed and balance has been restored to re-test again and again.  Without this who knows what continues to need treatment.

If you’ve seen a holistic doctor and only had baseline tests, further testing must be done in order to make sure your condition is improving.

Living Gluten Free

When I talk with patients about going gluten free, a lot of people are unfamiliar with eating this way and are uncertain about what they should eat.

Certainly, eating gluten free may be different, but it doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of foods you love.

I’ve put together a list of gluten free websites that you can enjoy to make your gluten free transition much easier…and hopefully enjoyable:

www.northtexasgig.com

Worth Area.  If you don’t, just google your city and gluten free and you may be surprised at what you will find.

www.celiac.com
Because gluten hides in foods we wouldn’t even imagine, this comprehensive list will give you foods that gluten can hide, as well as, articles, books and other sources.

www.glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com

We are a stressed out society, we don’t relax enough, and we are running our bodies into the ground.  Sometimes those effects are obvious to us, sometimes they are not, and other times, we just don’t care.  Lets examine one small facet of hormones and see the effects upon our bodies.

Cholesterol(which is very important to survival) is converted into Pregnenolone.  (Pregnenolone is pretty much a super hormone, from which all steroid hormones are derived.)  From this point the body has a couple of choices, first is to convert it to Progesterone, which leads to Cortisol(think stress hormone).  Second is to convert it to DHEA, which leads to Androstenedione, which in turn goes to Estrone, Estradiol, Estriol and Testosterone.  The body is very intuitive and realizes that if the body is under stress it needs more Cortisol, the stress hormone.  The side effect of this is that it will diminish the DHEA production, which effectively ends sex hormone production. The other side effect of this is decreased Thyroid hormone conversion(which decrease active T3 Levels) due to the increased cortisol.  Think of your symptoms and then think about your stress, it makes sense now doesn’t it?

Any guess as to what the four main food allergies/sensitivities are?  Well here they are:

  1. Gluten-found in bread, pastas, beer, etc.  AKA: modified food starch, MSG
  2. Egg
  3. Soy-tofu, soy sauce most commonly
  4. Milk

If you are eating something that you have a food sensitivity to, this causes inflammation.  The body responds to inflammation by raising the blood sugar.  Simply, knowing your food sensitivities and changing your diet accordingly will help bring down your blood sugar and allow your body to work efficiently.  These are one of the many imbalances I find out by testing you thoroughly and bringing your body back into balance to reverse your disease.

Whether you’re more on the hypoglycemic side (low blood sugar) or insulin resistant side (high blood sugar), blood sugar instability plays a big role in the management of your disease and reduction of your symptoms.

The following are good rules to stand by when it comes to keeping your blood sugar stable:

  1. Eat a high-quality protein breakfast:  Mom was right!  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
  2. Eat small amounts of protein every two to three hours: Nuts, seeds, meat, or protein shake are some examples.
  3. Find your carbohydrate tolerance and stick to it:  If you feel sleepy or crave sugar after a meal, you’ve eaten too many carbs.
  4. Never eat high sugar foods without some fat, fiber or protein.
  5. Do not eat sweets or sugary foods before bed.
  6. Avoid all fruit juices.
  7. Avoid all Adrenal stimulants:  This means coffee, energy drinks, and sodas.
  8. Eat a well-balanced diet consisting mostly of vegetables and quality meats and fats.
  9. Eliminate food allergens and intolerances.

10.  Eliminate parasites and toxicities.

We can help you find out what your food allergies are through a simple test.  This is part of our comprehensive management of you as a whole person.

Hormones play a huge part in your health and potentially plays a part into one of the many reasons for your disease, whether that be Type 2 Diabetes or Low Thyroid.

I was consulting with a female patient the other day and her testosterone levels were OFF THE CHART.  Through our consultation, we were able to pinpoint the source of the testosterone…it was her husband!  Her husband was using a testosterone cream that was getting transferred to her through skin contact.  Once we were able to eliminate the source of the testosterone and support her body to get rid of the excess testosterone, her symptoms improved.

This is just an example of taking a comprehensive look at your whole health picture in determining what various things may be perpetuating your disease.

There’s a new show on the Animal Planet station called “The Monster Inside Me” that features stories of people who had various parasites, worms, and other foreign invaders that almost killed them…and they lived to tell their story.

The truth is the majority of us are walking around with different parasites, worms, and other bugs and don’t even realize it.

Any foreign invader of our body will cause inflammation.  The body responds to any inflammation by raising the blood sugar.  Parasites or worms in the intestinal tract will cause inflammation leading to “leaky gut”.

Some of this “bugs” are difficult to get rid of.  Some have been living with you unknown to you for many years and they’ve gotten used to the nice house they’ve set up inside you.  This is why retesting to make sure these bugs are gone is absolutely important to make sure you are on the road to reclaiming your health.

As you begin to understand how different things can cause your immune system to attack your thyroid gland, one of the first things I change about someone’s diet is the removal of gluten.  When I tell a patient this, I usually get reactions from the extreme ends of the spectrum…either, “no problem” or “oh my god, what will I eat?”  Either way the question lies why?  The answer is that gluten and your thyroid gland have a very similar molecular make up.  And when the immune system is fired up and in attack mode it attacks both the same.  The result of the attack leads to the common symptoms of fatigue, memory loss, lack of motivation, hair loss, etc., etc.  The only way to truly combat this problem is to eliminate gluten from the diet.  Gluten free living is quite possible.  And when you start experiencing the positive effects, which happen rather quickly, you’ll be motivated to keep gluten out of your life!
